Naples airport closed in November 2026: flights and your rights
Published: October 26, 2026 · Last updated: October 26, 2026
Naples Capodichino airport closes for the whole of November 2026 so that its runway and taxiways can be rebuilt. Airlines have moved some flights to Salerno, about 60 km away, sent others to Rome, and cancelled the rest. Because the closure was announced months ahead, most passengers are not owed compensation, but if your Naples flight was cancelled or moved you are always owed a choice between a refund and another flight.
Airkarma handles claims under EU Regulation 261/2004: flights departing from the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, and flights into those countries on a European airline. Flights departing from the United Kingdom fall under UK261, which we do not handle yet.
No win, no fee: if we recover your compensation, we keep 25% incl. VAT. If we don't, you pay nothing.
A month without flights at Naples
GESAC, which runs the airport, has confirmed that Capodichino will be closed to commercial flights from 1 to 30 November 2026 while the runway and taxiways are rebuilt. The works are planned to take 24 days, with 6 days kept in reserve for bad weather, so the airport could reopen a few days early. The closure was first planned for early 2026 and was postponed to November.
Where the flights go
According to the local press, about a third of Naples flights move to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi e del Cilento airport (code QSR), and most of the rest to Rome. Among the airlines reported to move routes to Salerno are easyJet (Milan Malpensa), ITA Airways (Milan Linate), Vueling (Barcelona), Transavia (Amsterdam and Paris-Orly), Eurowings (Düsseldorf and Stuttgart), Iberia (Madrid), Luxair, Neos and flydubai. The Lufthansa group has reportedly suspended its Naples flights for November. For other airlines, check your booking: a flight shown from QSR instead of NAP now leaves from Salerno.
Getting to Salerno airport
Salerno airport is about 60 km south-east of Naples. The Campania Region has announced a plan with buses between Salerno airport and Salerno railway station and more trains between Salerno and Napoli Centrale; as of 26 October, the full timetable had not been published. Allow plenty of time, and check whether your airline offers its own coach, as ITA Airways does on some routes.
If your flight was moved to Salerno or Rome
The Naples flight you booked will not operate. In our view, that makes it a cancelled flight, so you do not have to accept the replacement: you can choose a full refund instead. If you accept a flight that lands at Salerno instead of Naples, the airline must offer, on its own initiative, to pay for your transfer to Naples, because the regulation requires this when it flies you to another airport serving the same region (Article 8(3); Austrian Airlines, C-826/19, 2021). The regulation says nothing about getting you to Salerno for a departure; if the journey does not suit you, ask for the refund.
Compensation depends on when you were told
A cancellation carries no compensation if the airline told you at least 14 days before departure, and most airlines changed their November schedules weeks or months ahead. If you were told less than 14 days before your flight, compensation may still be owed: in our view, an airline that knew about the closure for months can hardly rely on it as an extraordinary circumstance to justify a last-minute cancellation. We assess each case on its facts.
Your rights if your flight is cancelled
Whatever the notice, the airline must offer you a full refund within 7 days or another flight to your destination, at the earliest opportunity or on a later date that suits you. If you wait at the airport for a replacement flight, it owes you meals and refreshments and, if you have to stay overnight, a hotel. Where compensation is owed, it is per passenger:
- €250 up to 1,500 km, such as Naples to Milan Malpensa (about 690 km);
- €400 from 1,500 to 3,500 km, such as Naples to Lisbon (about 2,010 km);
- €600 over 3,500 km, such as Naples to New York JFK (about 7,070 km).
What to do now
Check your booking in the airline's app: look for the airport code (QSR is Salerno, NAP is Naples) and for any email about a change. Keep that email, since its date decides compensation. If the new flight does not suit you, ask for the refund; if you take a flight into Salerno, ask the airline to cover your transfer to Naples and keep the receipts. If you think you are owed compensation, check your flight with us: it takes two minutes and costs nothing unless we win.
Frequently asked questions
When does Naples airport reopen?
The closure runs until 30 November 2026, so flights are due to resume from 1 December. The works are planned to take 24 days with 6 days in reserve for bad weather, so the airport could reopen a few days early.
My flight now leaves from Salerno. Can I refuse it?
Yes. The Naples flight you booked will not operate, so in our view you can choose a full refund instead of the flight from Salerno.
Who pays for my trip between Naples and Salerno?
For a flight that lands at Salerno instead of Naples, the airline must offer to pay your transfer to Naples. For a flight that leaves from Salerno, the regulation does not oblige it to get you there; some airlines run their own coaches, so ask yours.
Am I owed compensation because of the closure?
Usually not, because most airlines told passengers more than 14 days ahead. If you were told less than 14 days before departure, compensation of €250 to €600 per passenger may be owed; a refund or another flight is owed in every case.
